Every Windows user knows the feeling. One day your PC is running fine. The next... it begins.
Here is the slow, inevitable descent into chaos, as observed over years of Windows tinkering.
Stage 1 — No Wallpaper
It starts innocently. You boot up and your desktop wallpaper is gone, replaced by a solid black (or accent-colour) void. You shrug and set it again. It comes back. For now.
Stage 2 — Taskbar Disappears
The wallpaper holds, but now the taskbar refuses to show up. Sometimes it hides automatically. Sometimes it's just... gone. CTRL+SHIFT+ESC still works, so you launch everything from Task Manager like a caveman.
Stage 3 — Aero Turns Basic
The transparency effects vanish. No more glass-like taskbar. No more blur. Windows looks flat, lifeless — like you've travelled back to 2004.
Stage 4 — CTRL+ALT+DEL Won't Load
You press the sacred three-finger salute and nothing happens. Or it takes 45 seconds. Your heart rate increases.
Stage 5 — Windows 7 / Classic Theme
Windows gives up on modernity entirely. You're now running what looks like Windows 7 Basic, or worse — the Windows Classic theme from the XP/2000 era. Grey square buttons. No gradients. This is your life now.
Stage 6 — Windows 95 Theme
Somehow, it gets worse. The UI regresses past XP, past 2000, straight to Windows 95. Start menu is a popup. Title bars are grey blocks. You half expect Oregon Trail to be installed.
Stage 7 — Empty Windows
You open File Explorer and get... nothing. No drives. No folders. Just an empty white box. The files still exist — you just can't reach them through normal means.
Stage 8 — No Windows at All
Explorer.exe crashes on startup and stays down. You're staring at a wallpaper with no way to interact. You become a command-line warrior out of necessity.
Stage 9 — Cursor Disappears
The mouse pointer vanishes. You navigate entirely by keyboard, guessing where buttons are. TAB, ENTER, ALT+F4. Muscle memory is your only friend.
Stage 10 — Windows 3.1 Theme
The UI, if you can call it that, now resembles Windows 3.1. Program Manager. No taskbar. No start menu. You've regressed three decades in a matter of weeks.
Stage 11 — CMD Prompt Only
No more graphical shell. Just a blinking cursor on a black screen. C:\>
You have reached the end. Format and reinstall.
No system is immune. The question is not if Windows will decay, but when — and how many stages you'll endure before throwing in the towel.
